AbstractThe mathematics of wave propagation in a viscoelastic filament subjected to constant velocity transverse impact is discussed. The equations governing the stress-strain-time behavior are assumed to be those for a linear model consisting of a spring coupled in parallel with a spring and dash- pot in series. The nature of the solution is discussed, and a method is described for calculating the configuration, and the stress, strain, and particle velocity distributions along the impacted filament. The method used consists of an integration along the characteristics of the system of differential equations describing the problem.
